How To Install a Yard Drain - Catch Basin
|
|

Yard Drain Install -
The purpose of a yard drains is to catch water and direct it away from the problem area. To do this, we need a couple things. 1st, check to see there is a down hill run away from the water problem. Next, we need a catch basin and pipe.
Follow the install below. The photos show the series of a typical yard drain installation.
NOTES: If you are a do it your-selfer, this project may be for you. It is very labor intense. Be sure to think about your back and always stop if you feel any pain

lay the pipe out across the yard exactly as it will be when installed.
Next cut the sod by following the pipe. Cut along both sides for a smooth cut.

Move the pipe out of the way and carefully lay the sod over to one side. Keep it on the edge of your trench.
Lay out some plastic liner to catch the dirt from your trench when you dig it out.

Now you are ready to dig out your trench to the proper grade so the water will flow through the new pipe.

As you dig out the trench, you can use a wheel barrel to take away the excess dirt. Try to keep your dirt on the plastic for easy clean up when you are back filling trench.

When the trench is dug out, lay the new pipe.

Cut the pipe to fit all Tees, 90's, Catch Basins, etc..

Attach your Fittings and Basins to the new pipe.

Align the all fittigs and pipe for proper fall and down hill run. It doesn't take much down hill for water to flow, but be sure to use a level and check for fall.

Now the trench is ready to back fill. Be sure to fill evenly so the sod will look good when you are finished.

Return the sod to the trench. Your new yard drain is ready for the rain!
