A Sump Pump is the most reliable way to remove water from a crawl space or basement. The pump sits down 2 feet below the floor of the crawl space or basement in a sump pit surrounded by gravel. Water follows the path of least resistance and migrates below the surface into the gravel and into the pit.
The pump has a float switch which activates when the water rises inthe pit and kicks on the pump. The easily removes the water, fast and quietly.
We recommend sump pumps over gravity! 100% success rate with pump compared to 60% success rate with gravity. When you see a sump pump, properly installed, you can say, "Water Problem Solved!"

The systems works well when all things are functioning properly.
Lets look at the system from a cut-away drawing showing the parts of a sump system.
In this drawing you can see water is collected in a channel along the perimeter of the basement wall. It flows around the perimeter and empties into a sump pit.
In the pit there is a pump. When the water level rises in the pit, a float switch activates the pump and the water is discharged.
Where does this water go?
It is lifted up and out thru the basement wall into a DRAIN TILE that leads to the street or strom drain.

What causes the system to fail:
A couple of easy problems are :
Pump Motor burns out. This is usually caused from excessive pump running which could be the result of a stuck float, blocked or broken drain tile out side leading to street, gutters overflowing, or simple an old worn out pump.
More difficult problems occur when the channel that carries water under the basement floor is blocked or broken. These causes are usually contributed too by, age, laundry floor drain that has been blocked allowing soap to back up under floor blocking the gravel around the channel pipe, shifting of basement foundation due to excessive erosion along basement walls.
